Lucky Beans takes place during the Great Depression. Marshall's dad lost his job, and his family is having beans for supper each night. Beans seem more appealing to Marshall when there is a contest to win a new sewing machine for his mom. Read to see if Marshall is able to use arithmetic to win the sewing machine.
The illustrations in this book are done in watercolor. Nicole Tadgell's illustrations have a really soft tone. Readers are able to connect to the story through the illustrations.
This book could be used for second and third grade. I would use this book to highlight history, but also to do math. I would get the students to try to guess the number of beans in a jar. I would then put the students in groups and give each group a random number of beans from the jar and have them count them. We would then add them together as a class. For ELL, I would strategically place them in a group with higher-level students so those students could assist the ELL student.
