Velma Gratch & the way cool butterfly is about a little girl name Velma who enters the first grade. She is nervous because she is living up to her two older sisters, who were really great first graders. She feels like no one notices her until the class goes to a butterfly conservatory, and a butterfly lands on her and will not budge for days. Read this book to see how Velma transforms.
Kevin Hawkes does a wonderful job illustrating this book. The illustrations are so cute and fun. The illustrations help tell the story in Velma Gratch & the way cool butterfly.
I would use this book in second or third grade. This book shows migration and metamorphosis, and could be used for science. After reading this book, the students could do a project on the metamorphosis of butterflies. For Gifted students, I would let them research the process of metamorphosis and act it out. I think this book is great for children to remember to be themselves.
