Historical Fiction Book Blog #16

Book Title: The Water Princess
Author: Susan Verde
Illustrator: Peter H. Reynolds
Publisher: Penguin Random House LLC
Copyright: 2016
Genre: Historical Fiction
Pages: 40

The Water Princess is a heart touching story about a young girl in Africa. Every day Princess Gie Gie seeks to find clean drinking water for her village. Instead of a crown Princess Gie Gie wears a heavy pot on her head so that she can collect water.
The illustrations in this book are watercolor, gouache, and digital images. They really convey what it is like in an African Village. They are kid friendly even though they are portraying a difficult situation.
This book could be used in second and third grade. I would get the students to write about what they would do to find clean drinking water. For Gifted students, I would have them to research how to make clean drinking water and then tell the other students in the class about it.
