Diverse Perspectives Book Blog #4

Book Title: Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon
Author: Patty Lovell
Illustrator: David Catrow
Publisher: Follett Library Resources
Copyright: 2001
Genre: Fiction
Pages: 32
Standard: ALEX Health Standard 8

Molly Lou Melon is very small, has buck teeth, is clumsy, and sounds weird when she talks. Her grandmother taught her to be herself and the world will accept her. Molly Lou Melon faces some difficulties when she moves to a new town and has to go to a new school. Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon shows us all that it is okay to be ourselves.
David Catrow shows how different Molly Lou Melon is from others throughout the story. I feel that this really highlights how she looked compared to everyone else. Catrow shows that Molly Lou just continues to be herself through his illustrations
This book can be used in grades Pre-K through Third. Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon can teach children that we should not bully someone just because they look different than us. I believe that teaching children that it is okay to be different and we should all embrace our differences. It is also important for children to understand that bullying makes the bully look worse than the person being bullied, just like it did Ronald in the story.

  1. This book is so cute! I think that this book would be a great book to introduce in any of the grades you listed because everyone needs to be reminded to stand tall. Hopefully I can get an opportunity to read this book to my class one day.
